Change the Brain; Relieve the Pain; Transform the Person
Education is the foundation of Neuroplastic treatment of persistent pain. Many of the approaches needed to perform this treatment require a knowledge of how the brain works as a seven dimensional organ. It can be understood from the different perspectives of anatomy, physiology, cells, synapses, circuitry, regional functions and neuroplasticity. The most important thing to remember is that the brain is an incredibly accessible organ that everyone uses seamlessly throughout their lives. Additionally, we rely upon it to function automatically and to process an astonishing amount of information sent to it from the peripheral body, while using that information to direct the body to do everything from move in a purposeful manner to lower or raise the rate of a heartbeat. Every moment of our lives our brains are changing based upon this input, and our brains direct our peripheral bodies to change, as well. This change, in response to incoming data and outgoing direction is neuroplasticity. It is a physical activity involving the development and integration of new nerve cells into existing networks, the making and breaking of new and old connections and circuits, the creation and resolution of inflammatory responses, the management of the blood-brain barrier, the assignment of nerve cells to specific functions, and the maintenance of energy in both the brain and the body. It is at this level of brain function, this neuroplastic change, where the disease of persistent pain has taken hold and it is by understanding and exploiting neuroplasticity that these changes can be reversed.
This section of the website is initially divided into professional and patient education, but an attempt has been made to make the information in either part useful to both groups. This should be seen as an introduction to the treatment, that can be worked on over time with practitioners and their patients. The treatment requires active participation by patients, breaks the paradigm of passive treatments and shifts to an interactive model of care. M.I.R.R.O.R. is the acronym that represents the steps necessary to use the brain’s ability to control persistent pain and to reverse the centralization of pain persistence. The simple ways we can access the brain are explained with focus on thoughts, images, sensations, memories, soothing emotions, movement and beliefs. Finally, we coin a new term, Cerebrosomia, to detail, discuss and utilize the unity of brain and peripheral body in persistent pain treatment.

Professional Education
The Vision Statement on the Organization Page of this site starts off by boldly stating our goal to cure persistent pain. For decades we have talked about managing our patients’ pain, but the idea of cure has never been suggested. Chronic pain has been viewed as a symptom beyond the ability of cure, something that is controlled in the spinal cord and is physiologically determined by the extent and type of the injury that caused it. Pain has been divided between acute and chronic, with various schemes for defining chronicity, i.e. pain that lasts greater than three to six months, pain caused by nerve injury, pain caused by unrelenting inflammatory processes, pain caused by injury to the spinal cord or brain, etc. The term itself, “Chronic Pain,” indicates some time factor. We choose the term “Persistent Pain,” as a better descriptor of the problem. The definition of persistent pain is pain that is abnormal and is caused by alterations of the nervous system due to neuroplastically determined changes in the brain-body loop leading to pain intransigence. Unlike acute pain, persistent pain is not a symptom, but is a disease marked by genetic, molecular, cellular, anatomic, physiologic, electrical and functional changes in the brain, all determined and perpetuated by neuroplastic processes.
This part of the website is dedicated to helping professionals use resources to integrate neuroplastic principles into their treatment of people with persistent pain. It includes an introductory lecture on this subject and announcements of more in-depth courses to be presented around the country to augment and enhance the ability to make this approach the centerpiece of treating patients with persistent pain. Also included in this section is a bibliography and the opportunity to participate in a constantly updating literature review of principles of neuroplastic pain processes and treatment. Bulk products will be available for purchase to augment patient treatment approaches.

Patient Education
This section of the website is dedicated to patients, their family members and their friends. We hope to provide an area that is informative and interesting. It is even difficult for physicians to understand persistent pain and our hope is that we can share what understanding we have gained with the people most affected by this condition. Many of the principles described here may be difficult to grasp, and we encourage you to discuss them with your own physicians. We have broken this up into four lessons and have used graphics wherever possible to help illustrate these points. We will continue to add videos, animations and graphics over time and encourage you to go to the Pain Bytes, Animation and Graphics sections of the site to bring these lectures to life and gain a better understanding of the principles presented. We will have several products available in the Product section of this site, including books, e-books, apps, treatment aids and gift packages. Our goal is to help those suffering with persistent pain to develop multiple strategies to replace their pain with pleasure and restore and transform their lives.
